Welcome to the Adventures with Divot & Swish blog!
Thanks for taking time to read about the launch of the Adventures with Divot & Swish and this blog!
For those who don’t know me, I’m Beth Brown and am passionate about teaching and positive youth development through sport. I earned my Ph.D. in education with an emphasis in sports psychology from the University of Kansas, and I competed in golf and basketball at the University of Oklahoma as an undergraduate. In case you’re wondering, I am “Sooner born and Sooner bred,” and I love cheering for my Oklahoma Sooners!
Learning Life Lessons Through Sports
Because of my desire to pass on what I’ve learned through participation in sports, I’ve created the children’s book series Adventures with Divot & Swish with a mission to inspire families and kids to have fun, become more active and learn life skills through sports.
We haven’t found any other characters in the world like Divot & Swish, who are two fun-loving, animated characters based on the sports of golf and basketball. Divot resembles a golf divot and what she enjoys most about golf is the friends she’s made through the game and being outside in nature. She also likes taking her dog, Kali, with her on as many adventures as she can.
Swish takes the form of a basketball net, because “swish” is the sound made when the basketball goes through the hoop without hitting any part of the rim. Although Swish played numerous sports when he was younger, he preferred team sports because he could have fun playing with his teammates and friends. Now he enjoys helping younger kids develop their own games.
Adventures with Divot & Swish is for adults to read to the little ones in their life, and also for elementary-aged children to read and be inspired for themselves. Through the stories, both adults and kids can travel the world, learn a new sport or activity and develop real-life superpowers - also known as life skills – through the friends Divot & Swish make and experiences they have.
Tips & Lessons from Divot & Swish
Each month, I look forward to sharing additional tips and lessons from Divot & Swish that you can apply through interactions with the young people in your life. It may be a question you can ask to support your child after a game, or a tip about how to help your child have more fun on the court, course, or field.
It takes intentionality to develop character through sport and the goal of this blog is to help you intentionally engage and support the young people in your life to have more fun, stay involved in sports, and develop life skills through their participation.
Sign up for the newsletter to stay in the know on all of the latest tips, lessons, and adventures and don’t forget to share with your friends who will enjoy going on Adventures with Divot & Swish.
